Many areas of the world have been used for military purposes over the last few hundred years and densely populated areas in the UK have been affected by World War 2 bombs, which has left a significant percentage of failed munitions buried underground and posing a dangerous threat.
As part of our Planning and Records services, we are able to produce desktop studies that are tailored to risk assessing sites that are likely to be affected by unexploded ordnance, We consult historical records, UXO datasets and internet resources in order to understand the initial phase of any UXO survey and to inform on further investigations and risk mitigations.
Our UXO surveys can be non-intrusive as we utilise magnetometer-based methods that are able to detect magnetic anomalies in the ground in correspondence with shape and size identification. We also have the capability to conduct intrusive surveys whereby sensors are introduced into bespoke-drilled holes and used to detect the presence of unexploded ordnance.
The intrusive technique is much better suited to built-up areas and areas with high ferrous content, whereas the non-intrusive methods are often better suited to greenfield sites.
