Rachel Maclean, the under-secretary for transport, has confirmed an initiative to enhance safety on the M1 Smart Motorway with the installation of innovative technology.
Artificial intelligence is used to immediately identify stationary vehicles, replacing the CCTV cameras that can take up to take 17 minutes to report.
Stopped vehicle detection technology will be installed on junctions 32-35a & 28-31 of the M1 after transport secretary Grant Shapps revealed that the rollout of the SVD technology would be fast-tracked across Highways England’s 800km smart motorway network.
Maclean also highlighted other safety improvements that have been established as part of a £500M commitment including “new bright orange road surface” and “new, more frequent signs”.
