National Grid Tunnels Survey

PROJECT BACKGROUND

National Grid have a network of cable tunnels running under various parts of the country, mainly in cities where pylons are not an option, these carry HV and EHV cables and are generally deep underground. Select Surveys were instructed by National Grid to carry out a photographic condition survey of their tunnels in Wimbledon.

SURVEY DETAILS 

Select Surveys examined three main features associated with these tunnels. The cable hangers, the cables themselves and the walls of the tunnel. There was an exhaustive list of condition information required by the client ranging from ingress of moisture and cracking of the tunnel walls to the condition of the cable hangers looking for damage and corrosion to these structures.

SAFETY

These surveys had several hazards associated with them which were managed by our experienced teams, a confined space entry control system was put in place and all personnel were given training in working safely around the EHV and HV cabling present.
